International Viola Congress 2010

Three years in the making, Catharine Lees hosted the 38th International Viola Congress at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). This event featured the world’s most prominent violists in master classes, recitals, lecture demonstrations, gala concerts, and panel discussions. The 2010 IVC also marked the first young artist competition held at a viola congress as well as the first distance learning master class, presented by Tabea Zimmermann. Another first was a panel discussion with quartet violists, Michael Tree, Larry Dutton, Sam Rhodes, and James Dunham with NPR commentator Miles Hoffman as MC.

The jam packed 4 day event included something for everyone. Master classes were presented by major teachers and performers including Nobuko Imai, Kim Kashkashian, Garth Knox, and Heidi Castleman. In addition, master classes focusing on orchestral excerpts and audition taking were presented by violists of major orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and LA Philharmonic. Wellness was also incorporated into the 2010 IVC with workshops in Alexander Technique, etc.

The 2010 IVC stretched the boundaries of traditional viola congresses. Chamber music concerts with internationally renowned artists were also presented featuring Gil Shaham, Akira Iguchi, Adele Anthony, Eric Kim, and many others.
